  1. using genkernel to generate a cpio initramfs
    genkernel --zfs --callback="module-rebuild rebuild" --no-compress-initramfs initramfs

  2. you can find the new created initramfs file in /boot folder, change its name to initramfs.cpio (NOTE: .cpio is important)
  3. change linux kernel config
    CONFIG_INITRANFS_SOURCE="/boot/initramfs.cpio"

  4. rebuild kernel, and copy it to EFI system partition
    cp arch/x86/boot/bzimage /boot/efi/gentoo64_zfs_initramfs.efi

  5. add new EFI stub kernel
    efibootmgr -c -g -l \gentoo64_zfs_initramfs.efi -L "Gentoo ZFS"

Grub2 supports loopback device, which is an iso image. So it will be very easy for Grub2 to load linux kernel image and/or initramfs from an iso image.

Booting your PC into Grub2 command line,

set iso=/systemrescuecd-x86-3.8.1.iso
loopback loop ${iso}
linux  (loop)/isolinux/rescue64 docache setkmap=us isoloop=${iso}
initrd (loop)/isolinux/initram.igz
boot
